Epernay Highlights

The train from Paris takes about 90 minutes and stops a short walk from the center of town, though the timetable is somewhat limited. The main town is walkable, though you will need a car/driver to visit any producers in the surrounding villages. Uber is not an option – book cars in advance with local taxi services.

Some of the famous Selosse champagnes paired with cheese at Hotel Les Avises.

Home of Selosse champagnes, approx 20 minutes drive from Epernay. This is a beautiful place to stay, and lucky guests may be invited to a tasting. The husband & wife team offer a charming and affordable restaurant experience. The money saved on food can go towards a bottle or two of the hard-to-find Selosse champagnes, only available to drink there.

One of the many famous champagne estates on the famous Avenue de Champagne.

avenue de champagne

This is the street where many big houses – such as Moet & Chandon, Perrier-Jouët, and Pol Roger – have gorgeous estates. It is definitely worth a stroll to take in the iconic houses and this piece of champagne history. Some places now have cafes where you can have lunch or relax with a glass of champagne.

A simple selection of cheese, charcuterie, and baguette with a bottle of grower champagne on the patio of Bar Brut in Epernay.

This charming champagne bar is right on the Avenue de Champagne, and open later than anything else on the street. They only carry very small producers, making it a delightful contrast to its neighbours. It’s a relaxed vibe with very knowledgeable staff who are happy to make a recommendation. The patio is especially great on a sunny afternoon!

The beautiful cheese selection at La Grillade Gourmand in Epernay.

Considered the best restaurant in Epernay, so book in advance. Known for grilled meats and their excellent wine list, they happily make an off-menu vegetarian meal that was just as exceptional. Save room for cheese!

A view of a ballon ascending over the vineyards from the Royal Champagne Hotel terrace.

This 5 star property is a luxurious option to stay, or come for a drink overlooking the vineyards. The hotel can arrange house visits (and anything else you desire). Definitely not for the budget-conscious traveler, but you won’t regret the indulgence.
