Tastings

My top picks for champagne bars and tasting events around the globe:

Champagne & Friends

Switzerland

Held in Zurich and St Moritz, Dan Romanov hosts a wonderful tasting event that he describes as “a cocktail party for champagne lovers”… and it definitely delivers on that promise! These walk-around tastings are held in stylish locations, with plenty of space for sitting and chatting with other guests. There are usually over 100 champagnes available to taste which are poured by producers and house reps. You can learn as much as you like, or opt for the more casual party vibe by socializing. There are plenty of passed canapés throughout the event – the truffle fries were a particular favourite.

Taste Champagne

Australia, London, Hong Kong

Hosted by Australian award-winning wine writer and champagne expert, Tyson Stelzer, this walk-around tasting features small growers and large houses in equal measure. There is usually a small selection of cheese available for grazing as you move between tables. This is a wonderful opportunity to taste a huge variety of champagne in one place, with knowledgable reps available for any questions.

La Féte du Champagne

Houston, Los Angeles, New York

Co-created by terroir expert and wine writer Peter Liem, this is a series of events which include masterclasses, theme dinners with famous chefs, and a walk-around tasting with a party vibe. Many producers are in attendance to share their champagnes and partake in the fun.

The Champagne Show

London

Hosted by London retailer The Whiskey Exchange, this large walk-around tasting usually features over 100 champagnes from both large and small producers. There are also a couple masterclasses for an additional fee. Food tokens are included in the cost of the ticket, though based on past experience, I’d recommend eating before arrival.

Grand Champagne Helsinki

Helsinki (obviously)

This annual 3 day event is created by Essi Avellan, Finnish champagne expert and Master of Wine. The Masterclasses are the main draw for me – they are exceptional and include very rare, old, or unusual champagnes. It’s worth noting that the ticket price only covers the cost of your Lehmann glass (which you can take home) – walk-around tastings are charged by the glass, and will vary greatly in price depending on the rarity of the champagne. If you are planning to attend, take careful note of which masterclasses are in English vs Finnish.

Reserved for You

London

Join this MeetUp group which has a broad range of predominantly champagne-focused events throughout the year. From champagne tastings to fine dining paired with champagne, there are plenty of opportunities to raise a glass with like-minded enthusiasts. Sanjeev is a very welcoming host.

Bubble Bliss

Paris

This charming champagne bar offers an incredible by-the-glass list, which always includes at least one magnum, one prestige cuvee, and some growers. The bottle list is impressive, the team are knowledgable and nice, and there are plenty of great small plates to pair with your bubbles of choice. Keep an eye on their Instagram for special events.

Dilettantes

Paris

This grower champagne shop offers wonderful masterclasses in both French and English. Their oenology workshop is particularly great in helping you learn how to describe champagne, and how certain production techniques influence the style. You must book in advance for tastings, or pop by and pick up some bottles to enjoy on your own.
